DOING BUSINESS IN FORTUNA

The Fortuna Business Improvement District (FBID) and its Board of Directors work hand in hand with the Chamber of Commerce to improve business throughout the community. Fortuna welcomes entrepreneurs considering locating in Fortuna and provides existing businesses with a variety of assistance.

The City and businesses of Fortuna have maintained a partnership in the Fortuna Business Improvement District (FBID) since 1990. The district is a non-profit that markets the business community of Fortuna through advertising and public relations, helps produce community events, markets to fill available commercial space and provides services to help strengthen existing businesses. The district's activities are run a by a seven member Board of Directors selected from the business community and a full time coordinator.

The FBID Office also acts as a "first stop" for new businesses and businesses looking to expand.

The FBID coordinator directs entrepreneurs to sources of funding, possible locations in Fortuna, government agencies and permitting required for doing business and helps with ideas to begin promoting the new or expanded venture

FBID has a number of programs designed to keep businesses healthy including seminars, a citywide gift certificate, a business to business guide and a cooperative TV ad program.

Merchants located in "Core Areas" of Redwood Village and Downtown have marketing associations that work with FBID to put on retail events and do advertising for their own shopping and service destinations.

The City of Fortuna, through its Redevelopment Agency, operates economic development programs for the City. The agency has received statewide recognition on ten occasions for excellence in its projects since it began in 1989.

The agency has received over $3.7 million in grants to help fund its economic development programs, has increased City revenues by over $.4 million per year and helped create 390 new jobs.

The Redevelopment agency offers business loans to help businesses expand and to assist new businesses in starting up. Projects must meet qualifications and if a project is able to obtain a loan from a bank it cannot qualify. Loans in the past have ranged from $5,000 to $450,000. The borrower must provide security.
